MISSIONARY BENEDICTINE SISTERS OF TUTZING

1920: Eight former East African missionaries and one new missionary undertook ministry in the former Southwest Africa, today Namibia.
German Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) had cared for this territory since 1895 with great sacrifice and effort. The breathtaking adventures that these first missionaries faced are told in the booklet by then Bishop Gotthard, Up to the Okavango! (Auf zum Okavango!).
Together with the Oblates, the sisters worked first and foremost in the flourishing mission stations on the Okavango River and in Ovamboland, as well as in the Catholic Hospital in Windhoek. Soon a native congregation of Benedictine Sisters was established in Oshikuku that developed well and became autonomous.

In 1999, 58 of these sisters chose to transfer to our Congregation, thus increasing the number of stations belonging to the priory.

Namibia ist ein Land der Weite, das die Herzen eines jeden Naturliebhabers höher schlagen lässt. Auf einer Fläche von 824.000 qkm (etwa 2½ mal so groß wie Deutschland) leben nur 2 Millionen Menschen - und davon 80 % im äußersten Norden des Landes, wo ein regenreiches Klima vorherrscht und Ackerbau betrieben werden kann. Je weiter man nach Süden kommt, desto trockener werden die Landschaften. Durch den klimatischen Unterschied bedingt, aber auch durch die Oberflächengestalt gibt es eine außerordentlich große Vielfalt von Landschaften und damit verbunden Unterschiede in Flora und Fauna. Von der Namib Wüste bis zu den tropisch - subtropisch anmutenden Landschaften im Caprivigebiet hält den Besucher "Afrikas herbes Paradies" gefangen
